Hill & Adamson Collection. [ca. 1842-1910].

Chiefly photographs depicting the life and landscape of eastern Scotland, including fishermen and women of Newhaven, scenes of Edinburgh, particularly around Greyfriars' and Calton Hill, and scenes of St. Andrews. The collection also contains portraits of prominent men and women of the day, and friends and acquaintances of Hill and Adamson. Sitters include James Nasmyth, Sir John Gladstone, Alexander Monro, and Lady Elizabeth Rigby Eastlake. Present are 1 calotype and 50 loose salted paper prints made by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson (Hill & Adamson), 47 carbon prints made by T. & R. Annan from Hill & Adamson calotypes, 1 carbon print made by T. & R. Annan of a Hill painting, 1 carbon print made by Thomas Annan of his portrait of Hill, 1 carbon print made by J. Inglis from a Hill & Adamson print, 20 photogravures and 1 bromide print made by J. Craig Annan from Hill & Adamson calotypes, 1 lithograph by J. Smyth, and 2 oil paintings by Hill. Among the loose salted paper prints are a group of 13 made by Adamson prior to his association with Hill, in ca. 1842. These images were made at Colinton, St. Andrews, and Bonaly, the estate of Lord Cockburn. Of particular interest are two images of mechanical models made by Adamson that illustrate the type of work in which he was involved prior to his career in photography. The Gernsheim Collection also includes an album by Hill & Adamson, titled 100 Calotypes, which is cataloged separately (call no. f TR 395 H553 HRC-P). The Photography Collection also includes a limited edition folio (unbound), comprised of 46 carbon prints made from original Hill & Adamson calotypes and one plate taken from a late portrait of D. O. Hill, which is cataloged separately (call no. f TR 680 E44 HRC-P).
